MAYOR’S TITLE

Suggested Prefix Of Lord CITY COUNCIL OPPOSES CHANGE The Christchurch City Council last evening decided unanimously, and with little discussion, that it opposed a suggestion that the mayors of the four main cities should be given the title of lord mayor. During the discussion the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) left the council chamber, but before leaving said that the proposal had come from Auckland and Wellington city councils to the executive of the Municipal Association. “I wish to make it perfectly clear that the idea has not emanated from Christchurch or Dunedin,” he said. “I move that the council record its opposition to the proposal,” said Cr. T. H. McCombs, as soon as the DeputyMayor (Cr. G. Manning) had taken the chair. Cr. Baldwin seconded. “No,” replied Cr. McCombs, when asked by Cr. J. E. Tait whether he wished to elaborate on his motion. An amendment by Cr. L. G. Amos that no action should be taken was not seconded after Cr. McCombs had said: “We should go further and express objection.”
