U.S. Carrier’s Trial Run To Begin

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEWPORT NEWS (Virginia), Aug. 29. The super aircraft-carrier. U.S.S. Forrestal, sails on her first trial run today. The 59,650-ton carrier, hailed by the Navy as the most powerful weapon in naval history, will make its run into the Atlantic. The Forrestal, approved by Congress after a bitter controversy, had been scheduled to make its first trial voyage on August 15 for its builder, the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, but a hurricane caused a cancellation. Nov/ the builder’s sea trial has been combined with the navy’s preliminary acceptance test, into one cruise. Bom and built amid atomic age controversy over the merits of bis ships and big bombers, the Forrestal will carry a crew of 3826 when it joins the fleet. It also will be home for about 90 planes—jet atomic bombers and interceptors. It has a canted or angled deck, which permits simultaneous take-off and landings. It has four steam catapults. Both are British developments.
