OPEN MARKET SYSTEM

FRUIT RETAILERS’ CRITICISM

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 29. The open market system is not an advance in retailing—rather it is the reverse, Mr L. Gooday, president, told the conference of the New Zealand Federation of Retail Fruiterers and Greengrocers in Dunedin this morn--ing. Delegates from all parts of New Zealand are attending the conference. “So long as these markets operate within the free enterprise system under which we operate, we accept them as part of that system,” Mr Gooday said. “But if they are given special monopoly privileges to operate outside the trading hours governing our trade, then the public has the right to expect the same service from the shops normally serving them.” The federation would welcome, and would, give every co-operation to an inquiry into retail apple prices, as had been suggested, Mr Gooday said. “I would say that the Government is aware that generally retailers are not overcharging—a point that .is illustrated by the fact that the Govern-ment-operated fruit shop at the Wellington railway station is charging the same prices as Wellington retail shops,” he said.
