“With some hesitation, we installed four additional pedestrian crossing*, making five in all, with the object of assisting pedestrians to cross a very busy road, and with the hope that their installation would to some extent make breaks in the flow of

traffic and reduce its speed.” said the Mayor of Riccarton (Mr E. J. Bradshaw) when the borough council wa« considering last evening a request from the Riccarton Borough Businessmen’s Association for a pedestrian crossing on Riccarton road, near Bartlett street. “We cannot claim, after the trial period, that either objective has been achieved,” Mr Bradshaw said. “From our observations, pedestrian crossing* are not generally observed by motorists ana are not properly used by pedestrians. My personal view is tha* there is a great need in the whole of the Christchurch district for education among all road users in the proper policing of crossings. “After consultation with the Transport Department, the department has undertaken to pay particular attention to our crossings and generally w | toughen up in the policing of them and in apprehending those who do not g observe them in the proper way.” The request was referred to the Transport Department for a report
