N.Z. UNIVERSITY SALARIES
Royal Commission Suggested ACTION DEFERRED BY SENATE Because proposals for the adjustment of university salaries in New Zealand are now before the Government, the Senate, at a meeting at Lincoln yesterday, deferred consideration of a motion by Dr. Douglas Robb (Auckland), seeking an inquiry bv a Royal commission or other authority of similar standing and responsibility. Many difficulties arose in the Dominion from the disparity in the salaries and status of university teachers and other professional men compared with those in other parts of the Commonwealth, Dr. Robb said.
There was a real disadvantage in competing for staff when some Australian universities. for instance, offered £3OOO a year for a professor, said the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. G. A. Currie).
Dr. Robb’s motion might prejudice Government action on the present submissions, said Mr K. J. Maidment (Auckland).
It was agreed to await developments
