PAYNE TROPHY MATCH

OLD BOYS’ TEAM TO PLAY-

DECISION MADE BY TOSS OF COIN

The High School Old Boys’ senior team will play Taieri for the Payne Trophy at Dunedin on September 3. A toss of a coin the problem of whether Old Boys or Christchurch, joint champions in Christchurch, • would compete for the trophy. .

At its meeting last week the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union decided to ask Old Boys to withdraw in favour of Christchurch because Old Boys had played for the trophy in the last two seasons.

When the committee met again last evening, letters from the two clubs were read. The Old Boys club, through its secretary (Mr R. W. Thomas), wrote as fol-

“We feel that while your unifin is endeavouring to settle amicably a contentious problem, nevertheless each year the arranging of the fixture appears to involve the union with long discussions with the Otago union, who last year had to arrange with Otago University a scratch team while players are away on vacation. It may be tne same problem could have arisen this year. “My committee also feels that the manner of your decision in asking any one of the leading teams to forgo its position left much to be desired, and it feels that there should at least have been an approach before the newspaper publication, vzhich was the first indication my committee had received that this course was to be followed. "Last year your committee was faced with a similar problem in regard to the Ranfurly Shield and rightly or wrongly decided that every endeavour should be made to foster club Rugby. My committee, with this lead, has set out during the last season to encourage all our club’s teams to play bright football. We feel that, with that end in view, we must protect our players’ interests. Each year the trophy is competed for, and no year has any relationship to another, a view with which your committee must agree. In previous years there have been ties and your union must have some precedent to follow. “My committee would agree to a playoff, well knowing that both sides would be equally depleted because of representative fixtures and injuries, if that is the union’s wish. My committee assures you that it feels that as the Payne trophy is an interprovincial contest, the decision must be with your committee and whatever decision you make my committee will accept unanimously, as it has always done. “My committee, draws attention to the fact that it could well have acceded to your request, but this position could from time to time, and it would be agreed that it is not a satisfactory manner to decide any competition for players who have had at least six months’ solid training and practices.” Christchurch Letter “My club is willing to forgo the honour of playing for the Payne trophy should the -Old Boys’ Club wish to play for it,” the Christchurch club secretary (Mr P. B. Fisher) said. “In the event of any dissension as to who should play, my club wishes to withdraw.” The chairman of the competitions committee (Mr R. W. Blazey) said that on Monday the committee had discussed the situation, and H. L. Johnsen (Old Boys) and J. Hotop (Christchurch) had been present. “After a discussion it was decided that the only way to get round it was for us to make the decision, and we made it,” Mr Blazey said. “The decision was agreeable to representatives of both clubs. We tossed ,a coin, Christchurch called and lost.” Mr Blazey said September 3 was the day of the second test at Dunedin, between New Zealand and Australia. They were willing for the match to be played at 11 a.m. The secretary (Mr A. C. Felton) said it seemed that September 3 would be acceptable to Otago.

CLUB ASKS TO HAVE POINTS FORFEITED

The Sydenham club advised the manage; lent committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening that on August 13 its junior team had been short, and that as the senior second division team had had a bye, four of its players had played for the junior side. The club said it had won the match, against Sunny-side-Spreydon. There had been ho intention of winning competition points illegally, but of ensuring a full junior team and making the game more satisfying for both sides. The club asked that its competition points be forfeited and awarded to the Sunnyside-Spreydon team. Mr H. C. Blazey said the club’s attitude was refreshing, and on his motion it was decided to write to the club exposing the committee’s appreciation. Mr C. Martin, for the Junior Advisory Board, said it was proposed to hold a sports day for under age and under weight grade players on October 1. A suitable ground had been proposed, he said.

Mr C. W. McKeegan was appointed manager of the Canterbury under 20 team to play North Canterbury at Amberley on Saturday.-
