RAILWAY BONUS PROPOSAL
GOVERNMENT REJECTION DEPLORED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 16. The Government had at last decided not to implement the recommendation of the Royal Commission into the railways that a long-service bonus scheme be instituted with the object of assisting recruitment and retaining staff, said the national council of. the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants in a supplied statement today. “The council deplores the decision of the Government,” the statement said. “Such a decision cannot but affect the relationship between the membership and the Government, especially as it is known that such a scheme had the full support of the Railways Commission. “The long hours of duty many of our members are called upon to perform must cease, and we demand that the Government take immediate steps to rectify the position.”
