RUBBER WORKERS’ AWARD

HIGHER PAY GRANTED Wage rates for adult male rubber workers in the Northern and Canterbury Industrial Districts are increased by 5s a week under a new award issued by the Court of Arbitration. Leading hands will be paid 15s a week extra, or 3s 6d more than the rate in the old award. Wages for youths, ranging from £2 14s 6d to £6 9s a week, have been increased by 2s 6d. An increase of 3s 4d has been made In the senior female workers’ rate—now £6 3s 5d a week. Junior female rates have been increased by 2s 6d a week. A new clause provides that incentive rates, when agreed upon, shall not be altered until and unless any proposed alteration is considered and agreed upon by both parties—union representatives and employers. When working with carbon black, banbury operators, mixers on open mills, and compounders weighing carbon black shall be paid Is 12d an hour extra, with a minimum payment of 6s 101 d a day. These workers shall be allowed 10 minutes each day at ordinary rates for changing time before their ordinary time for starting work.

The wage rates are retrospective to August 1, and the award will remain in force until-July 31, 1956. It embodies the terms of settlement arrived at by the assessors in Conciliation Council.
