RUGBY LEAGUE FRENCH LOSE TO AUCKLAND

TWO POINT MARGIN IN FAST GAME LAST MATCH OF TOUR (New Zealana Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 15. In one of the most exciting Rugby League matches played at Carlaw Park, the French side today lost the last match of its tour to Auckland. In i spite of a last-minute try by France. Auckland won by 17 points (three tries, one converted and three penalty goals) to 15 (three tries, two cei:- | verted, and one penalty goal. Play- n ‘on a firm ground before an enthusi astic crowd of 17,000. the game was far above the two recent test matches 1 in action and skill. The Auckland second five-eighths, ; C. Eastlake, was the star of the match. • His attacks made the opportunities • for two tries, and badly rattled the French defence. He was well supported by T. Baxter and R. Craike, who both tackled admirably. Only Delpoux. the French second five-eighths, showed any real Are against the fierce Auckland tackling, and he ran nearly 40 yards to score ; in the last minute. ! The outstanding forward was J. : Riddell, of Auckland. He deservedly ' scored Auckland's final try after fine backing up. J. Ratima, who scored a ‘ try for Auckland in the fourth minute lof the game, hunted most effectively i with Riddell and I. Grey, who ranged ! far and wide to discourage the French ' backs. The French hooker, J. Audobert, was • the most versatile forward on the j field, and his reverse passes when he joined the backs unsettled the Auckland players. ' The French were handicapped by the loss of their centre. V. Larroude. who suffered a leg injury in the first 1 half. Ratima. Craike. and Riddell scored tries for Auckland. Haegie adding the extra points with his kicking. M. Voron. A. Savonne and Delpoux scored ! for France, and Bennausse converted . two of the tries and kicked a penalty goal DRAW FOR SATURDAY The following is the Rugby League draw for Saturday, August 20:— Seniors. —Ta vendale Cup: Horn v.
