OPOSSUM TRAPS
Sir, —In June the member for Lyttelton kindly forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs on my behalf a letter alluding to the then correspondence in “The Press” on opossum trapping, enclosing the address of Major Van der Byl, a professional trapper, whose humane methods are widely used in civilised countries. The gist of the reply, dated July 21, is that steel traps are the easiest method. Two unsatisfactory statements are: (1) “Cruelty to opossums cannot be gauged by human, standards.” Why not? (2) A reference to regulations which are proved by the recent report from the Auckland Domain to be flouted in practice. I have had no reply to my further letter. Could Miss Mabel Howard be approached on the subject? She produced good results when she realised the unpleasant methods involved in»hare coursing.— Yours, etc., T. J. M. ANDREWS. August 15, 1955.
