PENSIONERS’ HOUSES IN KAIAPOI
COUNCIL DISCUSSES PROPOSAL A proposal for the erection of pensioners’ houses and the means by which land could be taken over for the programme were discussed by the Kaiapoi Borough Council last evening. The council was considering the report.of the housing committee which brought forward the proposal. The maximum, subsidy available on a single unit was £7OO, and a double unit £B5O, said the report The subsidy would be paid on a 50 per cent, basis. A plan was submitted to the committee by Gr. R. Monk, illustrating a lean-to type of flat, a three-unit block which was estimated to cost £2900. It was decided, that the units should be built of concrete blocks and have tiled roofs. The legal procedure necessary to obtain an area of land belonging to the Waimakariri Harbour Board in Charles street and Cam street under the Public Works Act was discussed by the council at some length. Cr. A. E. Cattermole said that there was a difficulty in taking over the land in Cam street. Four adjacent residents had rights-o£-way across the land on their titles. Cr. V. L. McEwen did not think the land could be taken over if adjacent owners had such easements. “The persons concerned are not concerned at losing access to their properties across the land; they would be pleased to see it cleared of the noxious weeds and rubbish which make it unsightly,” said Cr. Cattermole. The report was adopted. Shirley High School Site Tenders have been called by the Ministry of Works for the stripping and stacking of top soil at the site for the Shirley Boys’ High School. This is the first stage towards the construction of the school which, it is hoped by the Christchurch Post-prim-ary Schools’ Council, will be begun next year.
