CANTERBURY FINALS V. N. BRIGHTWELL WINS MEN’S SINGLES A large crowd watched fine table tennis when the Canterbury championships were concluded last evening. The Christchurch Poultry Clubs’ halt in Selwyn street was too small for the large number of spectators. The men’s singles’ final, between T. R. D. Flint and V N. Brightwell, was a match of brilliant attacking shots by both players. Flint showed a weakness in defence which Brightwell exploited. He won in three straight sets. -Miss J. Williamson won the Canterbury women’s singles title for the sixth time when she beat Miss J. Cox in three straight sets. The most exciting match of the evening was the final of the mixed doubles between V. N; Brightwell -and Miss P. Quinn and R. Orr and Miss Brightwell and Miss Quinn won after four sets had been played. Results were:— _ „ Men’s Singles.—Semi-finals: T. R. D. Flint beat R. J. Orr, 23-21, 21-10, 21-10; V. N. Brightwell beat J. Armstrong, 21-7, 21-17, 21-15. Final: Brightwell beat FJint. 21-7. 21-12. Men's Doubles—Final: R. Radford and D. Hill beat R. B. Radford and D. V. Fisher, 6-21, 18-21, 21-16, 21-12, 22-20. Women’s Singles.—Final: Miss J. M. Williamson beat Miss J. M. Cox, 21-11, 21-16, 21-14. Women’s Doubles.—Final: Misses J. M. Williamson and J. M. Cox beat Mrs T. E. McGregor (Wellington) and Miss PM. Quinn, 21-12, 16-21, 21-17, 22-20. Mixed Doubles.—Final: V. N. Brightwell and Miss P. M. Quinn beat R. J. Orr and Miss J. M. Williamson, 22-20, 15-21, 21-12, 23-21. Boys’ Singles (under 18).—P. S. Alexander beat D. Hill, 21-17, 18-21, 21-16. Junior Boys’ Singles (under 16).—P. S. Alexander beat D. Hill, 21-12, 21-13.
