The course was from the Halswell Domain through Tai Tapu, up Gebbie’s Pass to Teddington, Governor’s Bay, Lyttelton, and Sumner, to finish on Linwood avenue. J. Paviell was first, and M. Thompson returned fastest time. The riders met a strong easterly wind in the early stages. Alter leaving Tai Tapu they had a side wind as far as. Motukarara, and over this stretch they were sometimes blown across the road. Conditions were worse when they left Motukarara. They came on to shingle going into Gebbie’s Pass, and also had to ride into a very strong wind. The first rider to reach the top of the pass was J. Hayes, riding from the limit mark, and there he was 150 yards clear of R. Wildermoth: off the same mark. Wildennoth was followed by H. Cations, who had had chain trouble on the hill as well as a spill. L. Young was the next to the top, and he was closely followed by Paviell and A. Hayes passed through Lyttelton 300yds ahead of Paviell and Howison, but they caught him half-way up the Sumner road, and at the top Hayes withdrew with chain trouble. Cations was the fourth rider through Lyttelton and then came Shadwell, followed Jmin later by Thompson, with Craig, the other scratch man, Jmin behind. The field was now well strung out, with Paviell and Howison in a commanding lead. These two carried on, and in the sprint for the line they were neck and neck, but in the last 10yds Howison broke his chain, and Paviell beat him by half a wheel. Thompspn was the next rider to cross the line, and in gaining third place also took fastest time. Results:— J. Paviell (14min), 2hr 13min 35sec, 1: A.
