Mr Kent Criticises Imports (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) August 11. The importation of 7000 tons of coal from Australia was unnecessary, and meant a loss of £2OOO in spending money in the Grey district, Mr J. B. Kent (Opposition, Westland) said in the Budget debate in the House of Representatives this evening. The importation of coal from Australia for the first time in 14 years was a matter of concern, he said. The Minister of Mines (Mr W. Sullivan): It happened in 1951 when your miners struck. When Mr Kent mentioned the loss of spending money in his district, Mi Sullivan asked why the miners stopped work so often, and whether Mr Kent had any influence in his electorate. Mr Kent: Yes. I thought the Minister would say something like that. Mr Kent then quoted a report of a statement by a Mines Department official, that labour\troubles were not the cause of loss of production. Mr J. G. Barnes (Government, St. Kilda): That’s imusuaL Mr Kent’s speech was interrupted by the adjournment until 9.30 a.m. tomorrow.
