DRAINAGE
Sir,—ln reply to Mr H. P. Smith, I am fully conversant with all modern methods for the clearing of blocked sewers. Would it be too much for me to presume that I will the opportunity in the near future of seeing and using some of these modern methods which the Drainage Board, according to Mr Smith, is supposed to possess? The nearest to a modern method is a boring machine which, if used by competent operators, might be helpful, but as it is used is practically useless. As, for these new premises, they are, if rumour is right, only a portion of an old property which the board has purchased at Addington, and whatever amenities are provided are only what any worker is entitled to.—Yours, etc., R. J. SHADBOLT. July 30, 1955.
Sir,—The remarks of your correspondent from the drainage staff and the reply to him from the support what I said i about street sewers being blocked through rags and rubbish being flushed into them. When a working-man ratepayer was refused permission to discuss the matter with the board, he wrote to‘ the Minister, who in his reply said the board was going to increase the number of pumping stations. This suggested that the board blocked sewers. Increasing the number of pumping stations will not remedy the matter. It showed little intelligence to ask me to tell the board who flushed rubbish into sewers. The board was slow in providing reasonable conditions for some of its staff. After all these years they are only thinking about it now.—Yours, etc., OLD RATEPAYER. August 1, 1955. . •
