TERRORISM IN KENYA
Fate Of “Hard Gore” Mau Mau PROSPECT OF EXILE OR DETENTION (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, August 1. As many as 10,000 hard core Mau Mau terrorists may have to be detained or exiled for most of their lives, says the Nairobi correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.’’ He says that up to 2000 dangerous terrorists, many of them nothing more than homicidal maniacs, will be detained for life on an island in Lake Victoria. * At least 6000 and perhaps 9000 will live in exile settlements now being planned in remote areas in Kenya. “These will be men regarded as hard core Mau Mau, and not necessarily completely irreconcilable,’’ says the correspondent. “They will make their own settlements, to which they will be confined, and where they will eventually be joined by their families. “Preparations are now being made to start these settlements by the exploration of such problems as water supplies and freedom from disease. “Meanwhile Mau Mau prisoners are gaining conditional freedom in the African reserves, where they are still subject to close supervision, at the rate of 1500 a month. “At present 64,000 Mau Mau are behind the wire—4B,ooo in detention camp and 16,000, who have been convicted of crimes, in prison,” the correspondent- says.
