NO PROPOSAL FOR OPEN CHRISTCHURCH MARKET
There has been no iriove in Christchurch to establish an open market for fruit and vegetables such as has been operating in Wellington for some weeks. The market there has attracted the attention of some Auckland and Dunedin members of Parliament, and a group of Auckland city councillors proposes to advocate an open market. In Wellington the market was sponsored by the Wellington City Council.
He had heard of no move seeking an open market, said the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane. M.P.), yesterday. It was not for the City Council to take the step, and there had been no representations from the growers or the public; Mr Macfarlane recalled that more than 20 years ago there was a municipal market in Christchurch, but it did not last after the retailers had brought their prices down to and be-
low those ruling at the market. Market customers quickly went back to the retail shops. In Christchurch most people who wished to buy from the growers had only a comparatively short’distance to travel to buy from the farms round Marshland. Heathcote. Papanui, and Belfast, said the Mayor. In Wellington that was not so, as housing development had pushed the market gardens well away from the city. ■ i i. ■■■ ■■ » ■
