Spain's Claim To Gibraltar
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MADRID, July 9. A leading Spanish newspaper suggested today that Britain’s formula for handing over the Simonstown naval base to South Africa could be applied to Gibraltar. The influential “A.8.C.” asked editorially why. the return of Gibraltar to Spain could not be arranged in the same way. “Simonstown returns to South African sovereignty although it will continue to be a British naval base when the British need it,” the newspaper said. “In reality all free nations facing the Soviet threat are virtually allies.” [Britain’s transfer of control of
Simonstown to South Africa was under an agreement on the defence of the South African coastline. Both governments agreed the Royal Navy “will continue" to require the use of facilities in peace and war.” The transfer of the base, first ceded to the British Admiralty in 1898, will take place not later than March 31, 1957.]
