MOBILE X-RAY UNIT
ARRIVAL OF TECHNICIAN AWAITED The Health Department’s mobile miniature X-ray unit is expected to be in use again before the end of this month. It has not been used since June 24 because the chief technician was posted to take a similar unit to Pacific Island territories. The Medical Officer of Health. Dr. D. P. Kennedy, said that an understudy was being trained in Wellington and he expected the unit to be ready for use as soon as the technician arrived. In the meantime, some expected mechanical “teething troubles” were being dealt with, said Dr. Kennedy. There was no question of the unit being scrapped or replaced, he said. There was no area where they wanted to send the unit into which it could not go. Even should some structural work be necessary on the vehicle, the X-ray unit would still be used. It would be transported on a lorry while the vehicle was temporarily off the road. There was no slackening of the department’s drive against tuberculosis. Dr. Kennedy said, and under the newly-appointed tuberculosis medical officer (Dr F. A. de Hamel) the programme would gain new direction and stimulus.
Dr. Kennedy and Dr. de Hamel will leave Christchurch today for the West Coast—Dr. Kennedy on a routine visit, Dr. de Hamel to make preliminary arrangements for mass X-ray work in the Grey Valley.
