THE ROYAL NAVY EXPERIMENTS WITH GAS TURBINE ENGINES.—H.M.S. Grey Goose, the first warship to be powered solely by gas turbine engines, at speed during sea trials off Gosport, England. She attained a speed of 50 knots in smooth water. Formerly a steam gunboat, the Grey Goose has been fitted experimentally with two Rolls-Royce gas turbine engines of advanced design and two controllable pitch propellers. The new engines are only half the weight of the old steam turbines, and there is a saving of 25 per cent in space.
