USE OF ATOM BOMBS
Declaration By U.S. Sought
(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 11. i Senator Ralph Flanders (Republican. Vermont) said today he had asked President Eisenhower to declare publicly that the United States would not use its atom bombs on civilian centres, except in reprisal for Such attacks by an enemy. Senator Flanders said he thought next week’s Big Four meeting at Geneva would be a logical place for the declaration.
He said he did not know how Mr Eisenhower felt about it. Senator Flanders said: “Let us say unilaterally that we will not resort to the bombing of civilian populations except in reprisal for bombing by planes or guided missiles of allied or neutral centres of population. “Let us publicly and unilaterally wipe this bestiality off our strategic plans.”
