RUTH ELLIS TO BE HANGED
LONDON, July 11. Ruth Ellis, the 28-year-old model, who shot her lover, David Blakely, a racing driver, is to be hanged on Wednesday. The Home Secretary (Mr G. Lloyd George today refused a reprieve because he said there were not sufficient grounds to recommend any interference with the due course of the law. Thousands of Britons, among them many famous people, have petitioned the Home Secretary for mercy which Mrs Ellis herself would not beg. Mrs Ellis will be the second woman to be executed in London in more than 30 years. Mrs Edith Thompson was hanged in January, 1923, for her part in the murder of her husband, and the last woman to be hanged was a 53-year-old Cypriot. Mrs Styllou Christofi. who murdered her daughter-in-law. Since the beginning of the century 14 women have been executed in Britain. Several others have been found guilty of murder but reprieved.
