Record Wool Output In Australia

(Rec. 11 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 12. Wool production and the number of sheep in Australia reached record figures in 1954-55. according to estimates issued today by the Commonwealth Bureau of Statistics.

Output was 1,288,000,0001b —6.900.000 lb above the previous record in 195253. and 42.500.0001 b higher than the 1953-54 production. The estimated number of sheep in March—l2B,4oo,oo0 —is an increase of 1.500.000 over the previous highest figure recorded in March. 1954. The wool output figure is 8,000.0001 b greater than the estimate made in March. It comprised shorn wool including crutchings, at 1,179,000.0001b — a record—dead and fellmongered wool at 43,400.0001 b and wool exported on skins at 65,600,000. The number of sheep and lambs shorn increased by 2,100,000 on 1953-54, the average fleece weight being about the same.
