MOBILE BLOOD UNIT
REPORT SHOWS INCREASE IN DONORS
The use of the mobile blood transfusion unit in North Canterbury has led to a big increase in donors since the unit began operations on January 25. The three-monthly report of the North Canterbury centre of the National Blood Transfusion Service shows that there are now 2383 donors, compared with 1962 last year. Since January 25 the unit has visited SocKburn, Leeston, Oxford, Culverden, Waikari, Sockburn again, Rangiora, Woolston, Kaiapoi, Wigram, the Christchurch Teachers’ College, and Rakaia. The number of donors bled on the visits was 554. of whom 420 became new members of the service. The total bled by the unit was more than one-quarter of the number of donors the service had at the end of last year, and as a result the threemonthly period for Christchurch donors has been extended to four months.
The number’ of donations for the three' months was 1434 bottles, compared with 1391 bottles in the corresponding period last year. The blood issued to hospitals was 997 bottles (last year 808 bottles). The bottles were distributed as- follows:—Christchurch Public Hospital 822. St. George’s 59, Calvary 69, St. Helens 26, and others 21.
