N.Z. RED CROSS SOCIETY

NORTH CANTERBURY CENTRE NEW PROPERTY TO BE BOUGHT SOON There were now sufficient funds to proceed with the purchase of a building in Cashel street for the North Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, said the chairman (Mr a. E. Kincaid) at the annual meeting of the centre in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Kincaid was presenting the annual report to the meeting, which was attended by about 150 members. Delegates from 56 sub-centres were present. The purchase of the property, near Montreal street, would be completed within a week or 10 days, and the centre would have the use of the ground floor of the building, Mr Kincaid said. There were still other tenants in the building. It was important to have the kitchen built and the good neighbour service operating from the new building as soon as possible, Mr Kincaid said. A kitchen for the good-neighbour service would be built, and the building of a hall would have to be considered said Mr R. L. Ronaldson, an executive member. An estimate of £3OOO had been made for building the kitchen, none of which sum was at present in hand. A hall would cost another £2OOO. Mr Kincaid announced that cash collected in the society's appeal this month had amounted to £1867. and £ 947 had been raised bv a market, through raffles, produce and gifts. The president (Mrs J. G. L. Vernon) welcomed delegates to the meeting. There had been much development in the departments of the society and interest in the Red Cross had been spread by visits to other organisations, said Mrs Vernon. Officers elected were:— Patron, Lady Wigram; president, Mrs J. G. L. Vernon; vice-presidents, Mr _. Buchanan, Mrs G. H. Grigg, Mrs J. Montgomery; chairman. Hr A. E.
