EASY WIN FOR SUB-UNIONS

RUGBY FOOTBALL

UNIVERSITY TEAM BEATEN, 27-5 In a game in which some of the highlights were introduced in the second spell, a team from the subunions beat a combined Lincoln Col-lege-Canterbury University College fifteen by 27 points to 5 at Rugby Park yesterday. As a guide to selection for players to represent Canterbury the game did not serve any very useful purpose, for the University team, which was almost wholly comprised of Canterbury College members, appeared to treat the game as a holiday fixture and played accordingly. The game showed another purpose, however, for in view of the Town-Country game next Saturday it gave the Country team a valuable opportunity to gain combination and to show what it might be capable of when up against a first-class team. In the main the Country team, which had a firm control of the game in the second spell, displayed a wealth of talent and a variety of moves that were totally unexpected. It is not expected that many of the Country players will gain a-place in the Canterbury team, tout the selectors for Canterbury’s Shield team would be well advised to keep an eye on the fast and mobile No. 8, R. Moffatt, who was m the running for selection last year and has improved greatly-since then; J. Wilson, a quick-moving and clean-handling five-eighths; and J. Buxton, a more than useful breakaway forward. The team which played yesterday, with the addition of S. F. Hill, is virtually the team that will represent Country against Town on Saturday.

t> While thev Country backs were trying to find their feet on a very slippery ground and playing for safety, University opened up the play and took many risks before there was a splendid passing rush. The ball flew from Molloy to Woods, to Keenan, who left the defence standing with a straight run, and sent. Tapsell over for a try which Croucher converted. This was the end of the University scoring, for mishandling by the backs and a mis-kick by Croucher gave Pickering a try which was followed soon after by a grand try by Fowler, who received from a loose ruck. At half-time Country led by 6 points to 5. The Second Half Early in the second spell Country increased its lead when Moffatt scored a try after a passing rush in which the half-back, Hassall, and McPherson had a hand. A clever reverse pass by Wilson, which completely fooled the opposition, made a try for Moffatt under the posts—when Patterson concerted Country led by 14 points to 5. McPherson next intercepted a pass and had a clear run to the posts but he lacked speed and Woods overhauled him. Moffatt, however, was on hand and he dribbled over to score his third try, which Patterson converted. The University backs, who had not enjoyed much luck, continued to .open up play, and Tapsell, Molloy, and Stewart narrowly missed scoring. However, the next try went to Country when Wilson made a good break to send Moffatt and Fowler away for the latter to score. Hard kicking by the Country backs and weak stopping by the University backs gave the front-ranker, Fincham, a try which Patterson converted. Following were the teams:—University.—J. Croucher; R. James, R. Wells, J. Tapsell; C. Keenan, B. Woods; B. Molloy; J. Stewart, W. Wordley (Lincoln), A. Knox (Lincoln), N. Moss, F. Loe, J. Williams. J. Broomfield, D. McFadyen (Lincoln).

Country.—G. Patterson; I. Pickering, E. Gilmore, K. Fowler; A. W. McPherson, J. Wilson; B. Hassall; J. McLean, K. Fincham, A. Barnes, P. Jebson, M. Dods, D. McMillan, J. Buxton, R. Moffatt. Country won by 27 points (three goals from tries and four tries) to 5 points (a goal from a try). Mr D. W. Cain was referee.

WELLINGTON WINS AT HAWERA

TARANAKI BEATEN, 14-9 (New Zealand Press Association) HAWERA, June 29. Wellington ’beat Taranaki by 14 points (three tries, one converted, and a penalty goal) to 9 (two tries and a penalty goal), in a bright and entertaining Rugby match at Hawera today. The teams were evenly matched in the forwards and inside backs, but Wellington’s fast three-quarters were too good for Taranaki. Two of Wellington’s tries were scored by R. A. Jarden. The outstanding back was Taranaki’s second five-eighths, P. Dickson, who did a terrific amount of work on attack and in cover defence, often taking his own man and then getting across to mark a threequarter. R. Urbahn was a most impressive half T back, sending out good passes and making some elusive breaks. He scored an excellent try late in the game and made the opening for Taranaki’s first try. The Wellington forwards were well matched in scrums and rucks, but dominated the line-outs. Taranaki was weak in this department, and keenly felt the absence of P. Burke. Tries were scored for Wellington by R. A. Jarden (2) and A. J. Makeham. Jarden kicked a penalty goal and converted one try. For Taranaki, T. Murfitt and R. Urbahn scored tries, and E. Aylward kicked a penalty goal.
