A COMPARISON

Sir, —The activities of people like “No More War Preparations” are futile because they over-generalise. They use the same tactics for colonia’ wars, civil wars, national wars and imperialist wars. Each kind of war requires a different approach and technique for a peaceful solution. O 1 course, all are based on economic greed and exploitation. Organisation for peace cannot do much in themselves. They can, however, educate their members of Parliament. It is the politicians who decide whether we shall have peace or war. in Timaru we have the most brilliant and influential exponent on war and politics in Mr Cylde Carr, M.P. When other members of Parliament reach his ability to discuss intelligently the causes and cures for wars, we wilJ commence to make progress.—Yours etc., R. S. WHEELER. Timaru, June 28, 1955.

Sir,—Blatant philosophy says nothing is certain in this world; but three things are very certain indeed, and have been since the datfn of civilisation. They are death,” war, and the usage of the latest diabolical weapon to fight that war. Now. coupling this undeniable precedent with that infallible biblican prophecy: “There will be wars and rumours of war till the end.” the future will certainly conform to the past; and the A and H bombs will play their fiendish part. Nobody wants war—that is true—but it comes just the same because of the spark of antagonism natural in the heart of every human, which can be, en masse, so easily fanned into a searing flame—yes, even in the make-up of the pacifist who would “fight for peace.” While so-called civilised society requires police to ensure law and order, so will nations resort to force. —Yours, etc., KEEP YOUR POWDER DRY. June 29, 1955.
