Licences Due Applications for the renewal of all

training and driving licences are due today. The New Zealand Trotting Conference has met with a good response so far this month and already several hundred applications have been received. Placed Last Year • c /? runner-up to Johnny Logan in the Hamilton Handicap at Claude.SatuF£ay, filled a similar position m the same race 12 months ago when hp was beaten by Douglas Derby. Covfex has done well since he returned from Ausa n l on J h or two ago and lie should not be long showing form in the new season for V. L. Mackie, who has a big team in work at Kumeu. Smart Trot The veteran Grattan Loyal gelding. Mountain Range, showed that he had •°u t , of speed when he finished a close fourth in the Karapiro Handicap at Claudelands last Satur- ? ay / c « After conceding starts of up to 156 yards he gave a faultless display of trotting and his time for the two miles was 4min 28 4-ssec, a grand effort on a track which was far from being fast. Mountain Range is now a member of W. L. Rumney’s team. Rumney is well known as the trainer of Glen Star, which won many races a few years ago. Favourite Fails Mavis Dillon was a very strong favounte f°r the Electric Handicap at Claudelands on Saturday, but at no stage of the race did she look a likely winner. The Dillon Hall mare was always just behind the leaders, and m straight she could not come - A1 though she was right up with the fourth horse, she was well behten. An aged mare by Dillon Hall from Scatterbrain, Mavis Dillon has shown useful form this season and from 16 starts she has had two wins and nine placmgs. She has not yet come to i? her run and he r trainer, . Morrison, of Takanini, should not find it hard to place her to advantage early in the new season. Surprise Win Murray Grattan was having only his second start as a trotter and his tnird start in two seasons when he upset calculations by winning the Karapiro Handicap at Claudelands on His owner-trainer, R. A. McMillan, had him handily placed all the way and he finished too solidly tor Sundari. Murray Grattan had not won a race since he beat Staveley’s Lad in the Junction Handicap at Epsom in October, 1948, when he was a four-year-old. Murray Grattan is now a rising 11-year-old and is at an age where little improvement can be expected. He is a gelding by Josedale Grattan from a useful pacing mare in Crocus, the dam also of Floradale, Daphne Grattan, Quindale, Tapuwae and Single Lord.
