HOSPITAL STAFF SHORTAGE
WELLINGTON BOARD’S DIFFICULTIES (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 29. “Patients are , queueing up at the Wellington Public Hospital for their operations because of the shortage of staff,” said Dr. R. W. Durand, Super-intendent-in-Chief of the hospital, today. “Theatre staff is so short—l 4 instead of a minimum of 19—that surgeons have been asked to restrict their operating hours. “Two wards have been closed at the hospital, putting 60 beds out of commission because the hospital has not the staff to handle them. “Another ward has been ‘moth balled’ at the Lower Hutt Hospital, and two more at Silverstream. “The Wellington Hospital Board is short of 216 nurses,” Dr. Durand said. “The shortage of staff is worse than ever.”
