MONOPOLIES REPORT
Legislation May Follow (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 20. The report which the Monopolies Commission will issue today is expected to be so strong in some of its recommendations that the Govern -. ment may have to legislate against various monopolistic practices, the “Daily Mail” said today. “The commission will castigate many of the commercial practices that add pence and pounds to our shopping billa by stopping competition between trades,” the newspaper said. The report will deal with discriminatory restrictive practices common to all trades. “Among these are exclusive dealing, collective boycotts, private trade courts and similar methods of ruining the. small trader who does not agree to keep to price fixing rules. “The Prime Minister (Sir Anthony Eden) has already emphasised how important the report is. If the practices criticised are common throughout industry it is difficult to see how the Government can avoid anti-monopoly legislation,” the newspaper says.
