NEW SANDERS CUP ’ DESIGN COMPETITION WON BY G. S. MANDER (New Zealand Press Association} WELLINGTON, June 26. Four judges, representing the four main yachting centres—Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin—yesterday agreed on new specifications for Sanders Cup yachts. After a long debate, it was decided to adopt the design of Mr G. S. Mander, Christchurch, to replace the existing X Class design, originally prepared in the 1920'5. Particulars of Mr Mander’s design are: length 14ft, beam sft 6Jin, draught 72in, sail area 160 square feet on the wind depth amidships Ift 9in. minimum bare hull weight 2251 b, crew 3. Each hull will be produced In a master pressurised mould. Contestants will still construct then own decking, etc. Negotiations are in progress with an Auckland firm for the master mould. Though the old design had certain specifications. such as a length of 14ft, they were fairly flexible, and it was claimed that there had been so manv modifications to the hull over the yea'rs that the class was out of date and far behind modern trends.
