WOMAN’S LAKE SWIM

Commemorative Seat On Beach “The Press” Special Service ROTORUA, June 24. Taupo has “adopted” Miss Margaret Sweeney, the Auckland swimming coach, who swam Lake Taupo from end to end earlier in the year. Near the beach where she finished her swim, a stone monument in the form of a seat is being built, complete with a brass plaque to commemorate the event. Mr Tom Williams, a retired stonemason who lives at Taupo, approached the Taupo Borough Council for permission to build the seat. The council gave the idea wholehearted approval, and decided to provide a plaque setting down the details of Miss Sweeney’s swim to Taupo from Tokaanu. Miss Sweeney, training for the annual international English Channel race in August, visited Taupo two weeks ago to- train in a water temperature of 53 degrees. Taupo people are organising a dance to raise funds toward her travelling expenses.
