SEWERAGE SCHEME IN KAIAPOI
ONE ZONE NOW READY FOR CONNEXIONS The first section of Kaiapoi borough’s sewerage scheme is now ready to take connexions. It is known as Zone 5. When this was reported to the borough council last evening by the chairman of the sewerage committee, Cr. C. T. Williams, the Mayor, Mr N. E. Kirk, congratulated Cr. Williams and members of the staff on the .effort that had made the scheme available for use a little more than a year after work had begun. Cr. Williams reported that No. 5 Zone was ready for connexions; tne part of No. 3 Zone north of the Cam would be ready shortly; and No. 2 Zone between the railway line and the river was nearing completion. “It will not be long before nearly half the town will have sewers available for connexion,” he said. About £72,000 had been spent on the scheme to date, including about £57,000 on actual construction. About 35 per cent, of sewers and rising mains had been laid in terms of length and an even larger percentage in terms of cost, as three-fifths of the deep sewers had been laid. He estimated that in relation to costs 40 to 43 per cent, of sewer lines had been laid. Roughly speaking, he said, they had constructed and paid for about 55 per cent, of the scheme and were heading for a total expenditure of between £lOO,OOO and £llO,OOO. X , A A, Cr. Williams submitted to the council a series of recommendations for the further financing of the scheme.
Salvage of Sidon. —The salvage crews working on the 1000-ton British submarine Sidon, which sank at Portland last Thursday with the loss of 13 lives, today prepared the hull for an attempt to lift it from the seabed tomorrow.—London, June 19.
