SHEEP DOG TRIALS
SOUTH ISLAND TITLES (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, June 20. The South Island Sheep Dog Association’s championships were opened today on the property of Messrs W. D. McLeod and Sons, Croydon, about four miles from Gore, with 62 entries in the long pull and 54 in the zig-zag huntaway. The Gore Club is running the events for the first time in its history. The competitions were held in fine, sunny weather, after a frost. Seven of the entries in the two events were from the. North Island. For the first time in the history of district dog trials for many years, a licensed booth was conducted on the property. At the end of the day, 30 dogs had run in the long pull and in the zig-zag huntaway. The six leading dogs selected by the judge of the first event (Mr P. J. Cowin, Nelson) were:— I. W. Anderson’s'’Tim (Omarama), C. J. Crutchley’s Ray (Naseby), C. Kerr’s Len (Riversdale), W. W. Ross’s Glengarry (Rangiwahia), A. Paterson’s Scott (Oamaru), and M. A. Matheson’s Snow (Middlemarch). In the zig-zag huntaway the selections of .the judge (Mr S. Birdling, Banks Peninsula) were:— C. J. Crutchley’s Jim, A. E.- Moore’s Toss (Heriot), W. J. Ramsay’s Pete (Shag Valley). E. D. Pratt’s Rose (Taumarunui), M. L. Kerr’s Sniff (Waikaia), and W. J. McCauley’s Joe (Parawa).
