SYDNEY’S VISIT TO LYTTELTON

COMMANDER THANKS MAYOR Appreciation of the facilities provided during the visit of H.M.A.S. Sydney to Lyttelton last month is expressed in a letter that has been received by the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr F. G. Briggs) from Captain G. C. Oldham, commander of the aircraftcarrier.

“The magnificent hospitality of your citizens has been -much appreciated by us all,’’ said Captain Oldham. “We were amazed at the number who took an interest in the ship, and I regret that we could not accommodate all the visitors during the time allowed, and as the ship had to maintain a schedule’ that it was not practicable to extend our stay by another day and thus afford a further opportunity to the disappointed ones to come on board I can assure you that the visit to Lyttelton will live long in the memories of my ship’s company, and we will hope that it will be possible for us to visit you again in the not too distant future.”
