General Augustin' Guillaume, Chief of the French General Staff, will arrive at Auckland by air on June 28 on a tour of the Pacific area and the Far East, and while in New Zealand will be the guest of the Government. He will be accompanied by LieutenantColonel Dupuy, of the French Air Force, who will act-as aide-de-camp. General Guillaume will arrive in Wellington on June . 30. when official calls will be made, and will remain there until July I.—(P.A.) Brigadier L. W. Thornton, who ii Deputy Chief of the General Staff, visited Christchurch yesterday. Brigadier Thornton, who was born in Christchurch and educated at Christchurch Boys’ High School, recently returned to New Zealand from the United Kingdom, where he was senior Army liaison officer. He fibs been named as Quartermaster-General in succession to Brigadier C. E. Weir, who will become Chief of the General Staff. Mr Paul Frederick M-ountfort, who graduated from the Otago Medical School in 1948. and Mr Dion Wilson Warren, who graduated' in l£so. have been admitted to Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in general surgery. Of 282 candidates in this examination only 84 were successful, reports the London correspondent •of “The Press.’’ Messrs S. A. Coleman and D. Barrett were last evening reappointed as the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association’s representatives on the Canterbury District Patriotic Council, and they were thanked by the executive committee for their services in the past. The nomination of Mr A. C. Wright, of DUnsandel, for election as a delegate to the electoral college of the New Zealand Meat and Wool Boards; has been endorsed by the executive of the meat and wool section of th 6 North Canterbury district of Federated Farmers. This was announced yesterday by the provincial secretary (Mr A. E. G. Lyttle).

Mr N. A. Dunshea. manager of the National Safety Association, is visiting Christchurch and last evening spoke to the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. Sympathy with the relatives of Mr G. W. Skellerup was expressed by the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association last evening. Mr J. Bradley, the president, said Mr Skellerup had been a prominent manufacturer who had always cooperated With the association when necessary. Mr F. J. Shanks was thanked by the Riccarton Borough Council last evening for his services as its representative on the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council. He notified the council that he would not again be available. The council decided to confer with the Riccarton Returned Services’ Association before making another appointment. Mr David Corstorphine has been : p; pointed to the staff of Avonside Girls High School. He will teach mainly commercial subjects. Mr R. M. Anderson has -accepted an appointment as arts and crafts teacher on the staff or the school. The Kaiapoi -Borough Council last evening decided to nominate Messrs C. W. Tyler. W. H. Gillespie, and H. Owen Hills to represent the Ashley, Kowai, Oxford, Rangiora, and Eyre County Cduncils and the Rangiora and Kaiapoi Borough Councils on the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council.
