GOVERNMENT POLICY

Explanation By Eden

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 16. The Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden, told the House of Commons today that the British Government’s Solicy was always consistent with nited Nations Charter principles. Mr Konni Zilliacus, a Labour Leftwinger, urged him to convey the sense of this reply to Mr John Foster Dulles, the United States Secretary of State. Mr Zilliacus thought this desirable In view of the Secretary of State’s “publicly announced intention of using the Four Power talks to press tor changes in the internal regimes of some of the Eastern European States.” Mr Zilliacus said: “This is inconsistent with the charter and will bld fair to wreck the negotiations if such an attitude were persisted In." Sir Anthony Eden replied: "If we are going into the matter at all, we shall have to bear in mind certain assurances about, the rights of those countries freely to express their views which were given at Yalta. "Some persons may well have doubts as to how well those assurances have been fulfilled,” he said.
