SINGAPORE UNION LEADERS HELD
Back Of Strikes Thought Broken (Rec. 10 p-m.) SINGAPORE, June 17. Singapore police believe that firm action in arresting trades union leaders has averted the threat of violence in the Singapore strikes, and share the view of the Government that the back of the Left-wing move to paralyse Singapore has been broken. The Chief Minister, Mr David Marshall, said last night that trades union leaders held under the emergency regulations were planning violence during the strikes. Today, emergency transport arrangements were working well and thousands of schoolchildren and office workers were brought to the city in chartered buses guarded by police. Mr Marshall said that the people of Singapore had shown a splendid spirit. The only show of violence duripg the strikes—the attempted burning of motor-cars —continues and the twentyfifth incident was reported to tne police last night.
