NORTH ISLAND FINAL BAY OF PLENTY BEATS AUCKLAND (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 17. By winning all three foursomes and four of the six singles matches, Bay ol Plenty beat Auckland in the North Island final of the Russell Grace Cup women s golf tournament at New Plymouth today. I A southerly gale, with gusts up to 68 miles an hour, and showers made conditions trying. Bay of Plenty, the holder of the cup, will play Canterbury in the national final of the tournament.
Today’s results were as follows (Bay of Plenty names given first): — Foursomes.—Miss U. Wickham and Mr a B. W. Carter beat Mesdames S. G. McCoy and J. R. Morris, 2 up; Miss D. Blundell and Mrs L. Carruthers beat Mesdames Steele and L. Hastedt, 4 and 3; Miss M. Cave and Mrs T. Lawrence beat Mrs W. W. Cormack and Miss S. Glendmning. 4 and 3. Singles.—Miss Wickham beat Mrs McCoy, 3 and 1; Miss Blundell beat Mrs Steel, 1 up; Mrs Carter lost to Mrs Morris, 4 and 3; Miss Cave lost to Mrs G. W. Hollis, 4 and 3; Mrs Lawrence beat Miss Glendinning. 2 and 1; Mrs F. McDowail beat Mrs Hastedt, 6 and 4. U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP TOMMY BOLT LEADS IN FIRST ROUND (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.33 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, June 16 Tommy Bolt returned a score three under scratch of 67 today, to lead at the end of the first round of the United States open golf championship. I Ed Furgol, the defending champion, who [lost a ball on the first hole, had a 76. I Bolt putted 12 greens in one. He was the only player under scratch today. Walker Inman, a little-known professional, was in second place with 70. Jack Burke, 71, was in third place, and Ben Hogan. 72, was fourth. z Tied for fifth place, at 73, wfere Mike Souchak and Babe Lichardus. JOHN PANTON WINS SCOTTISH TITLE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) I (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, June 16. i John Panton, a Ryder Cup international, : won the Scottish professional golf cham- , pionship for the sixth time in eight years !at Elie, Fifeshire, today. His aggregate ' was 272, and this lowered his own four rounds record total for the event set (ivc years ago. Eric Brown, who scored 274, was run-ner-up.
