PROMOTION OF SAFETY
CAMPAIGN PLANNED FOR OCTOBER SPECIAL ORGANISING COMMITTEE “Operation Safety” is the title given to a campaign to be held in October by a Christchurch committee comprising representatives of Goverment departments, voluntary organisations, and local bodies. The campaign, which will begin on October 16 and end on October 21, is designed to give impetus to safety education throughout the year. It will deal with occupational safety in the home, road safety, electrical safety, farm safety, and recreational safety. The chairman of the committee is the Industrial Medical Officer (Dr. A. Douglas). Dr. Douglas said yesterday it was hoped to include radio talks and panel discussions. The campaign would be opened with a Sunday evening broadcast on general aspects of safety by the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s Medical Superintendent (Dr. T. Morton). On the Monday, some short safety education films would be included on a programme featuring a well-known radio personality at the Civic Theatre.
There would be a procession through Christchurch on Wednesday, October 19, said Dr. Douglas. Several dozen floats designed to emphasise the need for safety would take part. Some of the floats would display devices such as safety jug holders and safety furniture for children. A large number of Christchurch shops intend to play their part in the campaign with special window displays on safety themes. These will include safety in the mountains, safety in swimming, and safety with firearms. Throughout the week City Council traffic officers will visit schools, and it is hoped that Transport Department officers may be available for similar duties.
The organisations represented on the committee are the Health Department, which is sponsoring the campaign, the Department of Internal Affairs, the traffic department of the Christchurch City Council, the City Council, the Municipal Electricity Department, the Department of Agriculture, the Plunket Society, the Labour Department, the Automobile Associa-
tion (Canterbury), combined motorcycle associations, the Christchurch Fire Board, the St. John Ambulance Association, the Metropolitan Road Safety Committee, and alpine and deerstalking organisations.
