CEMENT CARGO DISCHARGED
WATER DAMAGE TO BAGS After completing discharge of a cargo of 3700 tons of cement at Lyttelton, the cargo steamer Galavale sailed last night for Australia. The last hold to be discharged was No. 2, where some of the cement had been damaged by water. During the last few days, most of the cement discharged from this hold has been rebagged. Much of the two bottom tiers of bags had Either set solid, or the bags had burst. Waterside workers, protected to some extent by gauze masks, used crow-bars and shovels to break out the cement. The solid pieces were discharged with scoops, and emptied into separate railway waggons. Yesterday, a mechanical fork-lift was used to break up the bottom layer.
