EVENING RECEPTION

COUNTY DELEGATES ENTERTAINED

To honour the delegates to the three annual conferences that bave been held in Christchurch this week—that of the New Zealahd Counties’ Association, of the New Zealand' Institute of County Clerks >and of the New Zealand Institute of County Engineers—an evening reception was held last evening at the Winter Garden. The hosts were Mr W. F. McArthur, chairman of Ward 11. and Major N. A. Rattray, chairman of Ward 12, and they, with Mrs McArthur and Mrs Rattray personally welcomed more than 500 guests.

-Mrs McArthur wore a frock of wine red silk crepe trimmed with crysta and a short fur cape, and Mrs Rattray’s black velvet frock was trimmed with bands of diamente on the shoulders.

Mr McArthur presided ahd welcomed the visitors on behalf of Wards 11 and 12 and the other counties of I Canterbury and Westland. A short concert programme of a very high standard was presented by five artists, all from Waimate. They were Mr Arthur Wheeler, who sang tenor solos with Mrs Wheeler as accompanist, Mr Donald Mclnnes, a baritone who sang two solos also accompanied by Mrs Wheeler, and Mrs Valerie Perry whose charming songs were accompanied by her husband Dr. A. L. M. Perry. The 'concluding numbers were two duets sung by Mr Wheeler and Mr Mclnnes. Mr Selwyn Toogood contributed items and after supper the floor was cleared and dancing was enjoyed. The successful gathering was organised by a committee set up by Wards 11 and 12 of the New Zealand Counties’ Association.
