Relinquish-Suphero For Oamaru Double
‘ RACING
Relinquish and Fulgent, both form horses, should represent Riccarton with credit in the Oamaru Wintec Cup kt the Oamaru Jockey Clubs winter meeting tomorrow. Fulgent has top weight of 9-3 to master for his attempt to win his third race over this distance on the course, and to record his second successive win for Mr H. D. Greenwood. He easily won the Waimate Cup under 8-8 on May 28, and a run of the same calibre will probably carry him into one of the places, although he appears unlikely to make a name for himself as a weight-carrier. • Relinquish has 191 b less than Fulgent. Like Fulgent, he has not raced since the Waimate meeting, where he beat all but Cock Crow in the w’elter. Earlier, he gained a sound win over a mile and 35 yards at Washdyke. In the field of 14 are nine horses which raced in bad ground at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting. Racing under trying conditions could have taken the edge off them and dulled their keenness, and the best of them may find Relinquish and Fulgent too good on the day. Diablo, closest to Fulgent in the handicap with 8-13, showed something of his best ability in heavy going when he finished third in the Provincial Handicap at Wingatui last Saturday. H? has an alternative engagement in the hurdles, and that may be his mission. Royal Voyage had his chance in the Birthday Handicap at Wingatui on June 6, but weakened from a trailing position to finish m the middle of the field. Something better should be seen of him if he can get clear early in this field. The others will not find him easy to master at the end of a mile and a quarter if he gallops generously, as he did when he beat all but Americus in the Sockburn Handicap, one mile and a half, at Riccarton in April, and when he won over 11 furlongs at Motukarara earlier in the season. Lord Rowallan has established his class as a sprinter, and up to a mile, strong finishes have marked several of his best performances. This distance is hardly likely to beat him if he is at his best.
Wingatui Winner Gold Mine, like Lord Rowallan, has been mainly confined to sprinting, and success came his way in that role on a very heavy track at Wingatui last Saturday. The switch to a longer distance on a track that should be. reasonably firm may find him at a disadvantage. Danger Point made no impression in his one race at the Dunedih winter meeting, where he was tried as a sprinter. He runs out a mile and a quarter strongly, and his record shows that the best is seen of him when conditions are reasonably good. Naval Treaty was well beaten by Fulgent in the Waimate Cup. and fared worse at Wingatui, though he lost his chance at the start of the Bjrthday Handicap.. He still appears to be a fairly good prospect at a mile and a quarter on his home track; but Fulgent, for one, may hold him safely again. ' Chandelle failed on a heavy track in the Birthday Handicap in her first race in open company. Her hack performances in Southland immediately before that were of a good standard, and could prove a more valuable guide. She may- be the beet of those on the minimum, though there is good reason, too, to respect the chance of Golden Morn on his home track. Sprinter of Good Class Suphero, a stablemate of Chandelle, appears to be the key horse in the Grange Handicap, the second leg of the double. This four-year-old son of Super is the class horse in the fieid of 11, four of which are double acceptors. He established his class with a brilliant win in the Waltham Handicap at Riccarton in April. He was tested for stamina on his home track Tn May, with encouraging results, but had a setback when being prepared for the D.J.C. Birthday Handicap, and had to miss that race. If F. W. Ellis has had time to bring him back to'or near to his bes,t Suphero will have a second-to-none chance. The Wingatui pair, Sure Swift a»d Canasta, did not distinguish themselves in bad ground on their home track last week, but both have the ability to run well under the better ebnditions likely tomorrow. Persian Gulf has shown that he can trace well fresh, and his lack of racing since January may not weigh heavily against him. An equally sound prospect is the Riccarton-trained Ngapunawai, which showed his fitness for this test with a smart sprint yesterday. Ngapunawai has made his mark over more ground, but he has enough speed to foot it with thfe best of the others early. Few should run out the race more solidly than this Palfrey gelding.
Form for Steeples Varying form backgrounds are held by the best-performed jumpers in the Burnside Hack and Hunters* Steeplechase, and the field lacks an outstanding candidate. Wealthy and Pageant were first and second over similar country and over the same distance at Waimate last month, and Wealthy could be excused for one failure since then in alto-' gether different .going over the tougher Wingatui course last week. There may be little between these two again. Qonrad’s second at Ashburton appears to hold some value in the light of the subsequent performances of horses he beat there. Mr A. S. Elworthy’s Royal Arch gelding did not jump evenly, and had a vain chase after Fort Marshall, but he dodged mistakes which put Chivalrous, Chasemint, and Pageant out of the race. Chivalrous and Chasemint have • since won at the Dunedin winter meeting. Improvement in Conrad’s jumping can reasonably be expected, and it is also very likely that he will turn the tables on Fort Marshall, if one may judge from the latter’s weak run at Waimate. The Southland horses. Culton and Bright Race, have placed form over hurdles, and may adequately meet the demands made by a not very much more difficult test for jumping ability.
Spanish Chief headed a beaten lot to follow The Tongs home in the hack steeplechase at Wingatui last Saturday. He made up a good bit of ground for that placing, but those behind him were completely bogged down on the very heavy track. Contented failed badly in the conditions in the hack steeples at Wingatui last Saturday when favourite a position he appeared to justify on form after placings in his two previous races. If his Wingatui races have not left their mark, this Inver-cargill-trained Old Bill gelding should beat those lower in the weights, and most of those above him. Chance for Vocalize Reasonably good jumping, allied to his ability on the flat, will make Vocalize one of the best prospects for the Hack Hurdles. This Wingatui-trained Royal Chief gelding made a successful start as a jumper in the hurdles at Waimate. and nine days later he was fourtn in the Greenfield Hurdles on his home track. On Waimate form, Vocalize should safely hold the Washdyke winner an 4 he wiU Probably outstay Johnny Peep. Vocalize may have fj*°“ gest opposition from the RiccarP 2\ lu ’ which finished third. «^imat e e D^h a ” d ’ *“*“ from him - Poilu should be one of the improvers Another will probably be Saxonia. which was running on to? fourth in the hurdles at Waimate havln « only his second start after a long spell. Shirleys Pride, a newcomer to hurdling, may tare as well, it not
better, than Bright Race, which had two hard races at Wingatui. Shirley's Pride won three races and was twice placed in her first five starts for Mr W. E. Hazlett in the autumn, and the good standard of her schooling could be a fairly reliable pointer to a sound record as a jumper.
