ANNUAL DANCE

OPAWA TENNIS CLUB A successful dance to celebrate the forty-seventh anniversary of the Opawa Lawn Tennis Club was held at the Wilding Park pavilion on Saturday night. The decorations and the mementos of the history of tennis in Canterbury lent a gay and appropriate atmosphere. The president of the club (Mr C. N. Franklin) and Mrs Franklin welcomed the large number of guests. Among those present were the vice-presidents, Mr T. W. Patterson, accompanied by Mrs Patterson, and Mr F. G, Ullrich, accompanied by Mrs Ullrich. A novelty in the programme was a names pairs event which 1 provided humour and variety. The master of ceremonies was the secretary of the social committee (Mr W. R. Rollinson) and the arrangements for the dance, which included an excellent supper, were made by the social committee. They were Mr Franklin (chairman), Mesdames C. R. Bailey and B. C. Lee, Misses J. E. Cressey, P. E. Foster, P. Fraser, and D. I. Paterson, Messrs N. L. Baas, C. G. Fitzgerald, Rollinson, R. T. Stuart and W. D. Rawlings. ASHUBRTON WOMEN ONLY. Women-folk of Ashburton and district have a rare opportunity on Thursday of this week of seeing at first hand some of the loveliest oi gowns, suits and coats, as well as hand-made millinery and delightful children’s wear at an extra special Mannequin Parade to be held in the Ashburton R.S.A. Concert Hall. All proceeds of this Fashion Showing are, to go to the Ashburton Free Kindergarten Association. Patrons will not only have the pleasure of viewing the latest overseas and N.Z. styles, but will have the added satisfaction of knowing that their contribution goes to a very worthwhile local object. Through their link with the huge Myer Emporium London Buying Office, whose Fashion Buyers search Britain and the Continent for latest style-trends, Hay’s, Limited, of Christchurch and Ashburton, who are staging this Parade will introduce some outstanding overseas fashions, including the first N.Z. showing of the new Hebe Sports suits. * These, with all the other lovely things to be shown by the Mannequins, will be on view and for sale on the following day or two at Hay’s Ashburton store. Two parades will be staged on Thursday, one at 2.30 p.m. and another at 8.30 p.m. Bookings indicate full houses for both showings, and intending patrons are urged to call as soon as posible and make reservations at Hay’s, Limited, Ashburton Store. —Advt
