LAST OF SYDNEY’S CREW LEAVES
RECRUIT FLOWN BACK TO AUSTRALIA
Recruit W. A. Marsden, the 19-year-old Australian naval national serviceman who developed appendicitis and had to be taken off the aircraft carrier H.M.A.S. Sydney an hour before she left Lyttelton on May 30, has gone home. He left Christchurch airport with the Tasman Empire Airways DC-6 for Sydney with a surgical scar and pleasant memories of his treatment in hospital to remind him of his stay in Christchurch. He will arrive at his home in Punchbowl. Sydney, only a few hours after his shipmates have finished their term of training. “They knocked off at 2 o’clock today. I’ll be home about 9 p.m.,” he said before the aircraft left on Friday. The Australian Navy is paying his fare home. Ten days of Recruit Marsdens unexpected stay in Christchurch were spent in hospital. He had three days convalescing and then climbed aboard the aircraft. When he returns to private life this week he will commence the fifth and final year of his apprenticeship as a refrigeration mechanic.
