BRISBANE CUP PROSPECT

GOLD QUALITY FIRMS IN BETTING

(From tffte Australian Correspondent oj "The Press") SYDNEY, June 7. The New Zealand horse, Gold Quality, which at his last start won the James Barnes Plate at Randwick, escaped a penalty for the two-mile Brisbane Cup, to be run next Monday. His trainer, W. Clifton, immediately sent Gold Quality and his stablemate, Royal Invader, to Brisbane for the carnival. Gold Quality has firmed in the betting order for the cup, but not so much as Golden Galleon, which has come through the final stages of his preparation looking like a Melbourne Cup prospect. Next Saturday's O’Shea Stakes in Brisbane will be the final cup guide. The Sydney Cup winner. Talisman, Gold Quality, Golden Galleon, and the Melbourne stayer, Hellion, will start. The O'Shea Stakes is run at weight-for-age. over one mile and a quarter. It usually provides a good pointer to cup prospects. Form on Saturday did not provide any pointer, because none of the prominent cup candidates was engaged.

A New Zealand horse, Hutton, contested the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Rosehill (Sydney), and disappointed greatly. Rumours that he had shown lameness on the morning of the race caused a drift in his price on the course. Close stable followers showed how baseless were the rumours by backing Hutton from 4 to 1 to favouritism at 7 to 4.

The little stayer was always a long way back in the field, and lacked sufficient dash in the straight to threaten Compound, which had led from the start. Royal Legend, owned by' a New Zealander, M. G. Christmas, caused a sensation on Saturday, when his form at Ipswich (about 40 miles from Brisbone) was the subject of an inquiry by the stipendiary stewards. Royal Legend is now trained by Frank Kennedy, whose horses have enjoyed a remarkable run of success in the last two seasons. On Saturday he was ridden by A. Mulley, who recently returned from Singapore. The chairman of the stewards (Mr N. Frawley) charged Mulley with having a strong hold on Royal Legend, and with having held the horse back. Mulley asked for an adjournment of the hearing to *Biursday, because he wanted to return to Sydney to see his son, who is ill.

Mr Frawley advised Mulley to bring all the evidence he could obtain for presentation at the adjourned inquiry. In Melbourne, Harry Lime was again backed in welter company, but this time he could not finish closer than fourth. The race was won by two lengths by the favourite, Townsville, -from the third favourite, Solrex, which was bought in New Zealand as a yearling.

Harry Lime was second favourite, being backed down from 5 to 1.
