REV. L. FARQUHAR GUNN

Call To Melbourne Church ADVICE TO CHRISTCHURCH PRESBYTERY Advice that the Rev. L. Farquhar Gunn had been appointed minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Churqji, Gardiner, Melbourne, was received at a meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery last evening. Mr Gunn is at present minister of St. Andrew’s Church, Christchurch. Born in Invercargill, Mr Gunn reiceived his secondary education at the Timaru Boys’ High School. He studied law before entering the ministry, and later graduated MA. from Otago University.

While studying at Knox Theological Hall, Dunedin, he wag awarded the

Ebenezer Prize for the best student of the year. Extra-mural studies gained him the degree of bachelor of divinity. During the Second World War Mr Gunn served overseas for two years and a half as a chaplain with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. For rescuing wounded men under shell-fire at Faenza he was awarded the M.B.E. Mr Gunn has had a distinguished career in the ministry. For some years he has been convener of the General Assembly’s youth committee, and he has been a member of at least seven other committees of the General Assembly. At the time of the Royal visit to New Zealand he was Moderator of the Presbytery of Christchurch. He was the first secretary of the National Council of Churches in New Zealand, and is a member of its executive council. He is chairman of the Board of Governors of the Christchurch West High School, and a member of the Board of Governors of St. Andrew’s College. St. Andrew’s Church, Gardiner, is the largest Presbyterian church in Melbourne. For the last 21 years the minister has been the Rev. Eric Owen, an outstanding leader of the church in Australia.

Tributes to Mr Gunn’s work in Christchurch were paid last evening by members of his congregation and by his fellow ministers. A presentation was made to him by the Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery (the Rev. J. S. Freeman).
