CARNEGIE GRANTS
TWO N.Z. MEN TO STUDY IN U.S. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 6. Two New Zealanders were among the individuals and institutions in British Commonwealth countries receiving grants announced today by the Carnegie Corporation, a private philanthropic foundation. The organisation made grants amounting to 2,000,000 dollars (about £725,500), including three to institutions in Africa, one to a British institution and two to Canadian institutions.
The grants to individuals went to three men in Africa, one Canadian, and one Australian, in addition to the two New Zealanders.
An unspecified amount was awarded to Mr Bruce Biggs, lecturer in the Maori language at Auckland University College, to study linguistics at the University of Indiana during the 195556 academic year beginning in September.
Mr Kenneth J. Maidment, principal, Auckland University College, was given an unspecified amount to visit colleges and universities in North America for six months beginning in December, 1955. In addition, two American scholars were awarded grants to visit and study in New Zealand and Australia. One is Mr L. A. Dunbridge, president of the California Institute of Technology, who will visit universities and Government research organisations in Australia and New Zealand for two months from July, 1955. The other is Mr William Heisey, staff member of the Division of Plant Biology, Carnegie Institution of Washington, who will study and consult on grassland problems for two or three months in Australia and New Zealand, beginning in November, 1956.
