STREET ETIQUETTE
Sir, —When will the citizens of Christchurch educate themselves to walk on the left-hand side of the footpath? They wander like a mob of cattle on a country road. Women are the worst offenders. Try to force them on to their correct side and instantly they screw their faces into knots and do their utmost to walk through a plate glass window rather than give way. Why are motorists permitted to take a left-hand turn when the pedestrian signal is against them? This does not make sense. On Thursday it was blowing and raining very hard as I crossed from Ballantyne’s to Beath’s corner. As usual, a motorist forced his way through the crowd and perhaps a little more water splashed about our legs was a joke to him. Recently his procedure nearly caused an accident.—Yours, etc., GROSS IGNORANCE. June 7, 1955.
