DISCHARGE OF COWDREY
Question To Be Asked In Parliament
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 5. The “Sunday Express” says questions will be asked in Parliament about the release from the R.A.F. of the test batsman, . Colin Cowdrey. Cowdrey was the batting hero of England’s Ashes victory in Australia last summer.
A socialist member of Parliament, Mr Norman Dodds, wants to know if Cowdrey, who is 22, will be called up for the Army to complete his national service “on duties requiring little physical effort.” Mr Dobbs said yesterday: “Many people say he is being groomed to captain England. “If he is not fit for duty, there are a lot of chaps doing national service who have no right to be there at all.” Cowdrey joined the R.A.F. on May 5. Twenty-six days later it was announced that he was being discharged because of foot trouble.
Cowdrey, who is on leave, said last night: “The thing is absolutely monstrous. I am unfit medically for the R.A.F.
“As a result of what my doctor has told me, whenever I play cricket I play with the constant threat of my feet breaking down.”
